The best thing about my job is that I get to attend early screenings before they come out in theaters or in this case, on Netflix. That feeling you get when you're about to see something that's going to blow your mind or say "Wow!, that was damn good. Can't wait to tell everyone how damn good this is." Dan Gilroy's "Velvet Buzzsaw" is that movie.
"Velvet" comes from the mind of Writer/Director Dan Gilroy who brought us the underrated and fantastic "Nightcrawler" and before I forget, wrote the fun as hell "Kong: Skull Island".
"Velvet Buzzsaw" in a nutshell: "After a series of paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art." Sounds plain in simple right? Oh, It gets good.
So, Jake Gyllenhaal plays art critic Morf Vandewalt who's as bitchy & hard ass as any art critic you'll meet. Don't take my word for it, I'm only getting my info from this movie. He has a secret relationship with art gallery owner Rhodora Haze's (Renee Russo) employee Josephina (Zawe Ashton. on a quick side note,...I almost stepped on Zawe's dress at the red carpet premiere. Sorry Zawe!) Morf's & Josephina's relationship is a pretty damn complicated one. One night when she goes back to her place, an old man is laying on the floor dead next to his apartment. She notices something interesting inside his place and she goes right in and checks it out. What she sees is tons and tons of paintings done by him. She realizes how beautiful these paintings are so she takes them all and decides to display them at the art gallery and keeps the money she makes off of them. What she doesn't know is they have some supernatural force that'll awaken.
Besides the 3 actors I mentioned above, This movie has a stellar supporting cast including: John Malkovich, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, Tom Sturridge, and Natalia Dyer as Coco. Poor little Coco...Anyways, This is a very solid movie with some pretty cool kills especially one in particular that involves a sphere. I don't want to give too much away but that kill and the aftermath is pretty damn funny. Of course the MVP of this flick is Gyllenhaal. I was having a conversation with a friend who was also at the premiere with me and we were talking about how awesome Jake is when he plays off the wall characters and this film he goes above and beyond. There's a great scene during someones funeral and Jakes character Morf decides to critique the funeral arrangements, the coffin, etc and you can't believe how awful he is as a person with no sympathy but you can't help but laugh. Everybody in this movie deserves what they get. Dan Gilroy writing and directing is top notch and art direction is fantastic.
There's a lot more to say about this flick but i really don't want to give a lot of it away. All in all, when the movie drops Feb 1st (tomorrow), I'd love to read your reactions to it. Oh, one more thing, I want to see a "Hoboman" movie. Gilroy, I hope you're seeing this.
